Ceri Richards ‘Under Milk Wood’ Chairs

Under Milk Wood is a 1954 radio drama by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, commissioned by the BBC and later adapted for the stage. It’s one of my favourite works by Dylan Thomas and was beautifully illustrated by Ceri Richards, one of Wales finest artists, as lithographs for a book published by ‘The Folio Society’.

Lyrical and lilting, a melodious prose-poem conceived as a ‘play for voices’, Under Milk Wood is an affectionate and funny hymn to Wales from its most celebrated son. Telling the stories of a day in the lives of the inhabitants of Llareggub – from Mr Mog Edwards, ‘a draper, mad with love’, to Nogood Boyo, ‘up to no good in the wash-house’ – the narrator sweeps through the town, listening in to the characters’ hopes and dreams and benignly watching over their actions in the richly realised landscape.

There are 12 lithographs in total illustrating this marvelous story, and i’ve decoupaged them onto old stacking chairs using Annie Sloan image medium and finished with clear wax.

I love this medium of displaying the illustrations – much better than framing them I think!
