… my ‘homage to John Piper’ drawer (with my Ceri Richards Chair)
I’ve always been a fan of John Piper, not just for his paintings of historic architecture and landscapes, which he is probably best know for, but for his abstract works. For a short period he was involved with the avant-garde and associated with Axis, a journal of abstract art edited by his wife Myfanwy Evans (my namesake). Amongst his own collection of paintings were works by Piet Mondrian and Alexander Calder.
This piece of furniture was inspired by a painting entitled ‘Abstract I’ which he painted in 1935, now in the Tate collection.
…loved throwing myself into this one – like it when a piece has meaning.
